The number of people
speaking each language is a fascinating subject because it involves two different categories: the
number of native (L1) speakers and the number of total speakers. As we can see in the graph below,
the two categories are not equivalent: English may be the language with the largest number of total
speakers, however Chinese is the language with the most native speakers.
Considering that English is spoken by the majority of people worldwide,
it is useful to provide information on language difficulty levels, taking into account the relevance of different languages in relation to English,
thus concluding that our results could apply to most English speakers of a certain level of competence.
